Pop quiz! It’s the year 2026. You’re strapped for cash. You’re eager to make music, but you don’t know where to start, let alone record. You’re a newbie, and Pro Tools still sounds like something only the bigwigs play with.
What do you do?
If your guess was to call it quits and commence pursuing that cushy office job you’re so contemptuous of, you guessed wrong. While it might not be the “ideal” choice for everyone, there’s always FL Studio.
But before you go making your decision to early, there are a few myths that need busting.
FL Studio stock sounds and instruments
They’re far from the greatest thing you’ll ever hear, but they’re a good start. When you realize that some of the stock sounds have been used by multi-platinum artists and producers, using FL Studio’s default VSTs doesn’t seem like such a crappy idea.
The key is knowing when to tweak the sounds you’ve been given and knowing when it’s not necessary. It’s all subjective, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hears FL’s Boobass VST and thinks to themselves, “Wow, that doesn’t totally sound like trash.” Regardless, with a little patience and technique, Boobass can sound pretty decent.
The learning curve for FL Studio
Put simply, Fruity Loops is pretty straightforward. When you run it for the first time, you may see a brief message and several files from a demo song you can play. You’ll obviously want to clear everything before making your first track, but I’d advise you to study the demo first.
This way, you can see how easy it is to get started, as it’s literally just a couple of mouse clicks away from making your first beat! Yeah, it may take you a little longer to learn the hacks, but when you compare the learning curve of FL Studio to another DAW like Ableton, FL reigns as the grand champion of simplistic and easy to understand.
The price of FL Studio
The demo version of FL Studio is completely free, and barring being able to save your projects, you can pretty much do anything you would with a paid version. While you’ll definitely want to pay for some version of FL Studio if you’ve found making music is that serious for you, you definitely don’t want to waste your money on a DAW if you decide making music just isn’t your thing.
Fortunately, Fruity Loops solves this problem because you can experiment for however long you want with the free version until you decide.
